The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trailer analysis

The new hobbit trailer for the second instalment of the three hobbit films was released recently. Directed by Peter Jackson the second Hobbit film has a lot to live up to after the first film being classed as one of the greatest films of all time. The second instalment continues where the first one left off. They have escaped from the misty mountains and the grasp of the white ork, and with Bilbo enquiring the one ring, the dwarfs, Bilbo and Gandalf continue their quest to retrieve the dwarfs homeland and their gold from the dragon, Smaug.

Showing this will give the audience an insight to what they should expect and the introductions of some old characters from the original Lord of the Rings story will excite the audience somewhat more. The new trailer looked good with the story continuing with the dwarfs trying to regain there land. The use of quick cuts to show what the film is going to be like. The feeling of a fast paced storyline will be at the forefront of the audiences mind. However the use of CGI in the trailer was good in some places. The use of it in the caves and on the mountains where they are walking across the sculptures is very impressive to the eye. However in my opinion the use of CGI on the dragon is very poor. In the first film which we only caught glimpses of the dragon it looked very realistic and very scary however in the second film, as we see a lot more of it looks like CGI has been used and the dragon doesn't look that realistic at all.

Another thing that is good about the trailer is the use of establishing shots throughout the start of the trailer. These show the land and settings in which the films will take place. The use of these shots in the cave, walking on the mountain statue and the dwarfs home land are good uses as this allows the audience to see the scale of the kingdom and the setting where the characters are at the moment in the film. Then we have the close ups of the main characters within the film. We have Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, and then the return of Legolas. This will show the audience who the main protagonists are and will also excite the audience as they will see the return of Legolas.

As we can see through the trailer there are a lot of uses of title screens to add information to the action on screen. This helps with any barriers that the audience may have understanding. The use of a lot of quick cuts as well helps the trailer build the intensity that it wants to. The close yups of fear and anguish show that the film is going to be action packed and in some places saddening and gripping. Like i said before the introduction of new characters to the frame also excite me from a fan perspective. Also the reintroduction of some antagonists in the story from the first film.

The use of some unusual angles like the angle from above the river and above the trees. This angle gave the overview of what was happening from two areas in the film. Also throughout there are a lot of close ups with the introduction of the new characters but to show what the facial expressions are of the characters in the middle of something. These close ups allow the audience to get into the midst of all of the fighting and the action.

The sounds used match the intensity that is throughout in the trailer and slows down and stops at the end when they want to leave that image and thought in the mind of everybody with the mention of a dragon. The close up at the end with the mention of the dragon as well makes the ending that even more tense and exciting. The music also matches the intensity in the film meaning that the music and the actions match which make the trailer all that more indulging.

The overall trailer does look very good and because it is part of one of the greatest film series I will be going to watch it.
