Gangster Squad was blockbuster film for Warner Brothers so they wanted to get the film out there in the public eye and make sure that they can make a profit on their film while also getting a good review.
Warner Brothers firstly brought out a teaser trailer of the film which lasted around 30 seconds. This teaser trailer allowed the audience to get a glimpse of what the film was about but not to give away hardly anything. Possibly giving things so that people can make suggestions or rumours but nothing more than that.
Then when people had made their suggestions they brought out several posters with the actors who would be appearing in the film. The posters suggested many things that could be relevant to the plot of the story but the main of the poster which attracted the audience was the star names that would be used in the game. The names such as Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Emma Stone attracted the audience to the film or attracted them even more if they had already been attracted to it. The use of top actors can make or break the amount of money a company will bring in through a film.
Then they brought out three trailers before the film. One trailer was the main trailer itself and the other two trailers where trailers focusing on the two different sides of the story. These trailers allow the audience to see what the plot is about and what rumours and suggestions that may have been made whether they are true or not. This also allows the audience to see when the film will be released. This is important as some of the money will start to come in in advanced bookings. Then they can see how much they will be roughly getting back in.
Gangster Squad also has its own website which allows the audience to see everything related to the film and this also allows the marketing of the film and other things such as the soundtrack of the film, film posters and extras such as crime ware.
Social media also has a big aspect in this. Through Twitter, Facebook and many others they are allowed to connect with a wide audience and then this allows then to get people interested in the film. This is otherwise known as viral marketing.
All of these stages contribute with the film to market the film itself and this is important because if the film doesn't get marketed nowadays the audience wont know about the film and then they wont watch it.
